In a surprising turn of events, Presiding Bishop Benjamin Ohene Aboagye of Perez Chapel International made an important announcement during a Sunday service on June 4, 2023. The church, known for its commitment to spiritual growth and unity, has declared a one-week period of fasting and prayers, commencing from the 5th to the 11th of this month. This solemn initiative comes in the wake of a recent controversy surrounding the church's founder, Archbishop Charles Agyinasare.
The Supernatural Summit, held at the headquarters of
Perez Chapel in Accra, was meant to be a gathering of spiritual enrichment and
edification. However, on the third day of the summit, Archbishop Charles
Agyinasare's sermon took an unexpected turn, causing a stir among the
attendees. The focus of his message revolved around divine protection and the
existence of evil forces, leading him to make a controversial statement:
"Nogokpo is the demonic headquarters of the Volta Region."
This statement, although intended to emphasize the
spiritual battle Christians face, ignited a storm of controversy and mixed
reactions from both within and outside the church. Many questioned the
appropriateness and accuracy of the claim, while others defended the
archbishop's right to express his beliefs freely.
Presiding Bishop Benjamin Ohene Aboagye took the
courageous step of calling for a one-week period of fasting and prayers.
"On the 25th of last month, during our Supernatural Empowerment Summit,
Archbishop Charles Agyinasare made a statement concerning the Nogokpo issue. I
think we are all aware of the issue in Ghana. It is trending on social media
and other platforms. We, the Perez Council, on behalf of the Executive Council,
have taken notice of all these things, and this is what the Executive Council
is saying. We are declaring a one-week fast from the 5th to the 11th of this
month, and we expect all pastors, elders, deacons, deaconesses, and all our
churches to participate in this fast for one week. We believe that God is our
helper. He is our rock. He is the one we look up to. So this is the decision we
have taken for now. We expect everyone [in all our branches] to take part in
this fast," he said.
